Hand-Painted Photographs
Wendi's hand-coloring technique developed from her
background in oil painting. Delicate layers of oil
paint have been painstakingly applied to each
archival photograph to achieve rich and subtle
hues.
This technique differs from traditional
hand-tinting,
which involves applying color and then removing it
to leave a hint or a 'tint' of color. Here the
artist builds up layers of color to achieve depth
and subtlety, using photo oils, oil sticks and oil
paint in tubes, a variety of fine brushes and often
her fingers.
Most of these hand-painted photographs date from
the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. As each version is
hand-painted, every photograph is unique.
Though these hand-painted photographs are limited
to editions of ten prints - 16x20, 20x24 and 30x40,
only a few of the images have more than four
versions completed. A few of Wendi's images were
also printed in 11x14 and 40x60. Most versions
differ in use of colors. There are also variations
to the prints themselves, which are printed on
archival fiber paper.
Some of these vintage painted photographs
are now available for sale. Prices for original
hand-painted photographs start at $1500.
Limited edition, signed archival
pigment prints are available of a selection
of the hand-painted images.
